Katy Kelly Noun

My work is a meditation on the wild beauty and shifting moods of Lake Superior and the North Shore of Minnesota. Through oil and encaustic painting, as well as ceramic sculpture, I seek to capture the ever-changing light, fog, and energy of the lake’s waves—forces that are both majestic and fragile.

The dynamic environment of Lake Superior is in constant flux, with each season bringing a new texture, tone, and rhythm to the land and water. Through my encaustic and oil paintings, I aim to evoke the tactile quality of the landscape—the movement of the water, the texture of the rocks, and the energy of the wind and fog. My ceramic sculptures, inspired by the wildlife that calls this region home, focus on the deep interconnection between all living things and the environment that sustains them.

At the heart of my work is a commitment to environmental preservation. I believe that art has the power to raise awareness and inspire action. In an era of climate change and environmental degradation, it is crucial that we recognize the fragility of nature and the need to protect the ecosystems that nurture us. Through my work, I hope to provoke reflection on the importance of preserving the wild spaces that remain and the creatures that rely on them for survival.
