Gregory Schulte
My approach to painting is rooted in exploration and discovery. I seek opportunities for familiar subjects to become new and peculiar through the combination of multiple references, editing, and invented imagery. In doing so, I aim to create unexpected perceptions of ordinary objects and places.
Recently, my focus has turned toward the transformative power of light—how fleeting illuminations and shadows can dramatically alter subjects and spaces. I have been especially drawn to the transitory atmosphere of twilight, a time when lingering natural light intersects with emerging artificial lights. In these compositions, glowing clouds haloed by sunset and silhouetted buildings punctuated with warm or cool lamplight evoke the moment when day gives way to night.
This brief mingling of natural and artificial light invites reflection and memory. As viewers associate their own experiences and emotions with this magical hour, it is my hope that the paintings elicit personal and narrative interpretations unique to each observer.
