Certain plants can evoke memories and connections. They hold stories that includes memories at my grandparent’s farm and eating blackberries (Bramble), the flowers your father planted because he thought your mother would like them (Vassar), or the name of a friend who gifted a plant to grow or to use for pigments (Lanie). They may be playful, coming from a childhood memory or hold a sense of melancholy as it linked to a time or place.
Each painting is infused with botanical pigments from plant and insect sources providing another layer to the works. I collect and grow the sources to provide connection to the land and seasonal changes. In this process, I notice how nature can evolve, heal and often indicate what might be happening in our environment. As I create the works, I let the pigments expand and grow on their own making their own marks while layering colors to saturate the paper. The pigments have a power of their own. To create a vibrant palette and the paintings create a place for life to continue.
