"Spontaneity is very important to me. I am continually drawn to folk artists, specifically African American Folk Art , for its freshness and lack of inhibition that it exhibits."
Rich in texture, color and personal symbols, her paintings are inspired by nature, her undying love of dogs (especially her often misunderstood Sheba Inu, Yoko) her intrigue of birds, man-made shapes and the relationship between them. "My paintings reveal themselves to me often bringing out something within that I was not consciously aware of at the time. This element of surprise and self-revelation is what keeps me wanting to paint."
Since the renovation of two old houses in Duluth, Mary has been painting on the old wood that was taken from them. "I like the idea that there is some history behind the paint. It adds to the story. And today, it's all about recycling."
